Much to be thankful for; much still to do

Friday, February 11th, 2011

As we wave goodbye to 2010, we have much to be thankful for:

• Being South African
• Our supporters, donors, partners and Friends of the TCD Trust passionate and insightful
engagement with our work.
• The generosity of our sponsors and our loyal Friends of the Trust.
• The dedication and hard work of the staff of Blomvlei Primary School who are so committed
to changing the future for the children at the school in Hanover Park.
• The beginning of the economic recovery which meant we were able to raise sufficient
funds to complete the construction of the Library at Blomvlei Primary School.
• A growing understanding of impact investing and its potential to transform South Africa.

But there is much still to do:

• Despite the recovery, the social development sector in South Africa still faces severe
resourcing challenges.
• The public sector and civil society have to work together to get essential services to
the people that really need them.
• As a nation, we have neither the time nor the money to waste on interventions that
have no measurable positive impact on people’s lives.
• Fragmentation of the sector threatens to dilute impact – we must make collaboration
our top priority. Don’t delay, become a Friend of the TCD Trust today and lets work
together to bring meaningful and long lasting change to desperate communities around us.
• Sustainability is not just a buzzword, it is the key to a prosperous future.

So here’s to rolling up our sleeves and making change happen in 2011.

Wishing you Peace, Love and Joy

2010 has been an enormously challenging but good year for the TCD Trust. We began construction of the Blomvlei Library at Blomvlei Primary School in Hanover Park in January 2010. Besides enormous increases in the building costs from the original quotes the construction was successfully completed in August 2010.

The library is magnificent and is already receiving quite iconic status in the area. The learners already have an enormous sense of pride of this beautiful new library on their school grounds even though it is not yet furnished.

Due to the huge building costs we did not have the sufficient funds to complete the landscaping, shelving, furniture, computers and equipment for the library. Since August we have been seriously fund raising for these things. In October we received an wonderful donation from TICE for R100 000.00 and we also held our own fund raiser dinner which was kindly sponsored by the Mount Nelson Hotel, we managed to raise a further R125 000.00 from our dinner.

SATSA members came out to the school at the end of October to celebrate World Responsible Tourism Day – 20 trees were donated and planted by the SATSA members to begin the greening of Blomvlei Library. Further greening and landscaping will hopefully be completed during 2011.

The TCD Trust also received a fantastic donation of R10 000.00 from SKAL International, Cape Town, at their annual Christmas lunch. The TCD Trust was one of three beneficiaries who were chosen by SKAL this year to receive funds raised by the committee and members during their 2010 monthly meetings.

In January we will use the funds we have raised so far to install the shelving and furniture and we hope to officially open the Library in February 2011 which also coincides with the 40 year anniversary of the school.

The TCD Trust has undertaken to assist the school and working in partnership with Equal Education Foundation to find a librarian for the library during the developmental stages in order to get the facility fully operational and functional. Some of the developmental programmes which will be introduced into the library will include literacy development, computer skills, life skills, career guidance, art and dance workshops.

We still have a long way to go to complete the Blomvlei Library, we thank all our sponsors, Friends of the TCD Trust and tourism industry affiliated organisations for all your support in 2010, it would not be possible without you. The Tourism Industry in Cape Town can truly be very proud of what has been achieved this year through supporting the TCD Trust and the work we do.

The holidays bring three special words to mind: Peace, Love, and Joy. They are words that carry warmth, and spread hope. They are what we wish for and what we seek. Wishing you and your families a very blessed Christmas and holiday season and a prosperous and happy New Year 2011.

Thank you to SKAL Cape Town who nominated the TCD Trust as one of three beneficiaries for 2010. Their generous donation of R10 000 towards the library at Blomvlei Primary School will assist the TCD Trust to support the library during it’s developmental stage.

The TCD Trust has undertaken to assist the school in it’s selection of a librarian in January 2011 and will assist with the operational costs of the new library during their developmental stage in order to get the facility fully operational and functional. Some of the developmental programmes which will be introduced into the library will include literacy development, computer skills, life skills, career guidance, art and dance workshops.

We thank the SKAL committee and members for their support and generous donation towards the new library at Blomvlei Primary School. The library will provide a place of learning, safety and inspiration enabling the children to realise their dreams and make a brighter future for themselves.

The Greening of Blomvlei Library

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Thank you to the SATSA members who came out to plant trees at Blomvlei Library to celebrate World Responsible Tourism Day.

Thank you for your very hard work and contribution towards the greening of Blomvlei Library in Hanover Park. I cannot believe what a difference it made immediately having the trees there. It is such a wonderful contribution to the school and something which you could come back and visit in many years to come and remember the day you were there and planted the trees.

Thank you for your support and contributions to the Blomvlei Library.

We are proud to have these companies as Friends of the Trust
