Blomvlei Primary School celebrates 40 years !

Tuesday Evening the 27 September we had the privilage of attending Blomvlei Primary Schools 40th Birthday concert. The concert celebrated 40 years of memoirs from 1971 – 2011. The concert opened with pupils walking through a packed Hanover Park Community hall waving South African flags and singing “Heal the world”. The children sang and danced various musical numbers from High School Musical to Moppies / Klop, klop, Safrafina, Nelson Mandela’s Freedom Speech right up to Disco Inferno and Jail House Rock !!!

It was wonderful to be a part of their celebrations and to feel the energy, excitment and enthusiasim of the children, parents and teachers. The concern raised funds for the school and assist parents who cannot afford to pay the school fees.

The children spoke about the highlights of the 21st century from the 70′s to the 2000′s – a very proud moment was a salute from the children to the Trustees and the TCD Trust for their new library which they said was the highlight of the 2000′s for the school. It is moments like that which make us realise how important the work is that the TCD Trust does and how it impacts people’s lives and inspires them to have a better life for themselves.

The concert was a great success and we thank the children, teachers and parents for all their hard work and continued enthusiams for life and making their lives meaningful. Blomvlei Library will grow from strengh to strengh with committed teachers and parents and will hopefully be a highlight for the children at the school for another 40 years !

Dear Friends of the TCD Trust,

First I would like to introduce myself. I am Carlijn Smeets, 20 years old and I come from The Netherlands. In The Netherlands I study Commercial Management at the Zuyd University in Sittard. I choose Marketing, Communication and Social media as my specialty. I am doing an internship in South Africa for 6 months now, I arrived in August and I will stay till the end of January. I started my internship at Ashanti Lodge in Cape Town. Lisa Krohn, owner of Ashanti Lodge, is one of the four trustees of TCD Trust. When I heard of all the great projects TCD Trust is doing, I was very excited when I got the chance to work for TCD Trust. I will help Bronwen Wetton, the manager, with all the social media activities like facebook, blogging, newsletter and online marketing. Besides that, I will also visit the projects to get a clear idea of what the impact is for the community. I am very impressed of what the TCD Trust can mean for these communities. I have already visited the RGG Creche in Philippi and the Library in Hanover Park.

Every Tuesday I will be working with Bronwen Wetton for the TCD Trust. I am very glad I got the chance to work with Bronwen, she is a very nice lady and I learn a lot form her about South Africa. She has given me the chance to be involved in the projects and mean something for TCD Trust. And because I am a social media student, please go to our Facebook page and ‘ like’ it. This is a good way to stay updated with all the good things the TCD Trust is doing :-)

Thanks,
Carlijn

Thanks so much to Exclusive Books for their wonderful donation of books to Blomvlei Library. We collected three boxes of books from their Cavendish store this morning which contained a fantastic selection of books for children aged between 6 – 12 years. Included were a number of activity books which can be used by the teachers and librarian to do fun and creative activities with the children at the library.

Other books which the children will really enjoy were High School Musical, adventure stories, fariy tales, educational books, animal stories etc. We think this is a really great new selection of books for the children to read once they get back to school after their school holidays. We are always looking for new books for the children to read now they have two library periods per week in their school curriculum.

A very BIG Thank you to Exclusive Books for their generous donation and support of the new library at Blomvlei Primary School.

The TCD Trust Fundraiser 2011 Rocked !

On the 3 September the TCD Trust held our second annual fundraiser at the Mount Nelson Hotel. We raised close to R130 000.00 in one night! Funds raised on the evening will go towards building a proper wendy house structure for RGG crèche in Philippi, Cape Town, replacing their leaking shack. This will change the lives of these incredible woman who have worked so hard to establish this crèche and the wendy house structure is their final hurdle to cross. We thank the Mount Nelson Hotel who sponsored the venue, meal and wine on the evening, our guests who supported us, our sponsors who provided prizes for our raffle and auction, without you this would not have been possible.

Our MC, Vernon Kirsten entertains the crowd and helped us to raise R58 700.00 on our auction !

Di Thomas, TCD Trust Trustee, and her son, Ricky, cycled across South Africa in the middle of winter in the Freedom Challenge. They raised R30 100.00 for GCU Soccer Academy to buy football equipment for the club. Pictured here is Mario from GCU receiving the cheque from Di & Ricky.

Thobekile and two of the teachers from RGG crèche performed two of her own compositions of music and poetry on the evening which was so brilliant that there was complete silence in the room as everyone listened to the music and thought provoking lyrics.

And then the party ROCKED !

Next year make sure you book early if you also want to be part of the fun.

We thank you so much for your support of our fundraiser and the work we do at the TCD Trust. These sort of evenings reflect the incredible things that can be achieved by working together and bringing real, meaningful and long lasting change to people’s lives in South Africa.
